Cleaning Systems, Inc. Announces Their Zero Waste Initiative

De Pere, WI- Cleaning Systems, Inc. (CSI), manufacturer of Lustra® Professional Car Care Products and DynaEdge® cleaning and protection products for transportation and industry applications, announced their plans for a Zero Waste initiative. Their goal is to recycle, repurpose or reuse over 90% of their current waste by the end of 2012. CSI has been researching ways to limit and eventually eliminate sending waste to landfills as part of their goals in their ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Certification. “As daunting as it initially appeared, we learned very quickly that there is a demand for the manufacturing byproducts we generate making reaching our goal achievable,” said Rick Martens, Senior Chemist for CSI. “We have been recycling paper, cardboard, metal and plastic for many years. What we assumed to be waste and not recyclable turns out to be appropriate for repurposing for development into alternative fuel for industries,” said Martens. According to Martens, the majority of such waste comes from packaging.

As part of the initiative, CSI’s marketing team is developing a communication package for training personnel and identifying receptacles for recyclable materials. “Awareness of the initiative and changing people’s ideas of what constitutes waste is key to the success of the program”, said Mark Brock, VP of Marketing for CSI. “We are very excited about this step in our pursuit of a sustainable operation.”

CSI first attained ISO 14001:2004 certification for its environmental management system in 2009 and has sought to continually improve and demonstrate leadership in its protection of the environment.
